Sound testing services
Sound insulation testing assesses the performance of party walls and floors between dwellings, ensuring compliance with Building Regulations in England and Wales. It’s often called pre-completion testing (PCT) and is mandatory for new or converted residential properties.
Why is Sound Testing is Important?
Sound testing measures airborne sound transfer (e.g. noise from music and TVs) and impact sounds such as footsteps. Sound testing is conducted to ensure buildings meet minimum noise resistance standards, creating better living conditions.
When Is Sound Testing Required?
Sound tests are required for both new and converted dwellings. It is not required for detached houses or properties registered with the Robust Details scheme. Due to the nature of testing, it can only be done when the property is near completion.
What do I need to do to prepare for my sound tests?
Rooms should be fully formed and nearing completion. Windows and doors, should be fully fitted, but no carpets should be present (see our sound insulation checklist for further information). To conduct the test, we will need access to both sides of the partition. No noisy site activities should be taking place at this time.
How Many Tests Are Needed?
For every ten flats or houses, one set of tests is required. This includes two airborne tests for walls and two airborne and two impact tests for floors. If there are any variations in the construction, more tests may be required.
What are the common causes of failure?
Common causes of failure include:
- poor workmanship;
- poorly fitted doors/windows;
- unsealed cavities; and
- incorrect installation of materials.
